Masaaki Hashida has come back to the lab from three-month study abroad at Dr. Marek Ruzicka's lab in CAS.

Yohei Hori has come back to the lab from three-month study abroad at Dr. Michael Schluter's lab in TUHH.

The 3rd Workshop on Advances in CFD and LB Modeling of Interface Dynamics in Capillary Two-Phase Flows was held at Graduate School of Engineering, Kobe Univeristy.

The workshop was hosted by Kobe University, ViR2AL Institute, EPFL and JSMF. Prof. John R. Thome (EPFL) and Prof. Tomiyama served as the co-chairs and Prof. Hayashi and Dr. Micro Magnini (Imperial College London) coordinates the workshop. The following is a brief description of the workshop quoted from the flyer:

Workshop description We are happy to present this workshop on the latest advances in the computational modelling of the interfacial dynamics of capillary two-phase flow phenomena using Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) and Lattice Boltzmann (LB) methods. In addition, experimental two-phase flow visualization techniques will presented. The Workshop is now at its 3rd edition, following the first two editions in 2016 and 2017 that took place at the EPFL in Lausanne, Switzerland. The international team of lecturers is as follows:

  • Prof. J.R. Thome (EPFL)
  • Prof. G. Anjos (State University of Rio de Janeiro)
  • Dr. M. Magnini (Imperial College London)
  • Prof. T. Seta (Toyama University)
  • Prof. A. Tomiyama, S. Hosokawa, and Prof. K. Hayashi (Kobe University)

We had participants from domestic companies and universities and also from overseas. The 4th workshop will be held in Rio de Janeiro and hosted by the State Univerisy of Rio de Janeiro. The registration will soon be opened. Get more information from the 1st flyer available at ViR2AL web site!

iCOFTEC speakers visited our lab on 25 Oct.

  • Prof. Chen Li Sun, National Taiwan Univ., Taiwan
  • Prof. Yougdon Kwon, Sungkyunkwan Univ., Korea
  • Prof. Joung Sook Hong, Seoul National Univ., Korea
  • Dr. Simon J. Haward, Okinawa Inst. Sci. and Tech. Grad. Univ.

Raito Goda has come back to the lab from one-month study abroad at Prof. Vierow Kirkland's lab in Texas A&M University.

Takeyuki Shimamura was awarded the Best Presentation Award from the Japanese Society for Multiphase Flow.

He presented the presentation, Interfacial and Wall Friction Factors of Gas-Liquid Countercurrent Two-Phase Flows in Vertical Pipe with Sharp-Edged Upper End by Shimamura, Goda, Hayashi, Hosokawa, Murase, Nishida, Tomiyama at Multiphase Flow Symposium 2018, Sendai, Japan and was praised for his excellent performance in oral and poster presentations.

The 8th European-Japanese Two-Phase Flow Group Meeting was held in New York. Prof. Tomiyama served as the co-chair person of the Japanese side and Prof. Hayashi served as the meeting secretary. We brought three presentations by Prof. Hosokawa, Prof. Hayashi and Mr. Funahashi to the meeting. See a meeting report in ICeM Newsletter by Prof. Masahiro Kawaji, the co-chair person of the Japanese side.
