Do you knoe the real sea and sky?

Two-thirds of the Earth's surface is covered with vast seas. Spectacular natural phenomena in the seas always fascinate us.

Basic oceanographic and meteorological researches and transmitting the results to the world

The Air-Sea Laboratory conducts a wide variety of basic and applied researches on oceanographic and meteorological phenomenon, which are components of marine environment. Representative research topics are marine meteorology, air-sea interaction, biochemical material cycle, prevention of maritime casualty, weather routing, offshore wind resource assessment, etc. The research style is characterized by comprehensive investigations combining in-site observation in the sea, analysis of satellite data and simulation with numerical models. Our goal is to transmit valuable research products and information to the world, as well as to clarify and understand the natural phenomenon.

Education

Covering a wide range of disciplines on atmosphere and sea

In the Air-Sea Laboratory, there are two teaching staffs (Profs. Kozai and Hayashi) who specialize in oceanography, and two staffs (Profs. Ohsawa and Yamaji) specializing in meteorology. Their main lectures are; Meteorology, Oceanography, Meteorological Information Analysis, Marine Information Analysis, Marine Meteorology, Satellite Oceanography and Coastal Oceanography in the undergraduate course, and Advanced Marine Meteorology, Ocean Remote Sensing, Weather and Sea State of Coastal Seas in the master's course. Taking these lectures together with Special Study for earning the bachelor's degree and moreover Advanced Seminar and Advanced Research Works in the master's course, will offer you a chance to acquire systematic knowledge on oceanographic and meteorological disciplines. Every year, more than 20 undergraduate and graduate students study in the Air-Sea Laboratory.
